About Charter Schools

Accountability

Massachusetts standards for charter schools are the highest in the country

The Massachusetts charter public school application and accountability system has been rated the best in the nation.

  • Proposed schools must survive a rigorous, multistep application process.
  • Charters must be renewed every five years and are subject to annual, comprehensive reviews by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • School finances are reviewed every year by independent auditors and are also subject to state audits.
  • Charters that don’t succeed can and will be closed.
